Welcome to the Young Person’s section of CARA’s website.

We have developed this part of the site specifically for young people and in response to the many requests we get from them for information on a range of issues.

In the first instance, we wanted to respond to the many enquiries we receive about self harm.  Recognition and understanding of how and why young people self harm has grown over the past few years, but there is still a real need for young people, professionals, families and friends to know the facts.

We hope our site can challenge some of the myths on self harm so that we can reassure young people who self harm, and their families and friends, that they are not alone and not “freaks” or “weirdoes”, and provide them with information which they may find helpful.

The most important point is that we are not telling young people to stop self-harming, but that we are offering them information and support to help them look at some of their choices.

Self-harm is a way of coping with emotional distress, so we offer young people some other ideas of how to cope.

We have also included some information about relationships which focuses on self care and staying safe, and there are some links to some other great sites that develop these themes.

One of the most important parts of the site are the ‘creative’ pages where we hope young people will be able to express some of their difficult emotions creatively using some of the resources and tools that we’ve provided.  We’re hoping to extend these shortly to include a ‘graffiti wall’ and a ‘create your own band’ programme.

The site will continue to develop and grow and we’ve already got lots of ideas for what should go on there next including bullying and substance abuse; but please
let us know what other information you’d like to see on here, and we’ll do the best we can to ensure it’s included.

CARA would like to thank The Basement Project for all the information which we have been able to incorporate into our Young Persons Section
